Tuna Fever Fishing Charters

Tuna Fever Fishing ChartersHave you ever dreamed of catching the elusive “grander”? If so, our Bluefin Tuna charters routinely land 1,000 pound and over Bluefins. We give you the best chance in the world to experience the ultimate in deep sea fishing – the chance to land that giant tuna.

I live and fish from the port of Canso. However I can fish from Canso or the gulf. My vessel, the Melissa and Papa III is a 38 foot fishing boat. I use Penn 130 reels, and a fisher can either fish from the chair or from the side of the boat (ie. the gimble). I am sorry, but I do not have any stand-up fishing gear, yet. However, if a fisher wishes to bring their own gear, I have no objections.

Meet the Captain

Capt. Dan MacDougall is a 3rd generation fisherman with over 35 years of experience. He fishes Lobster, Snow Crab, and Bluefin Tuna. Dan has been an active volunteer on various advisory roles in the fishing industry. He has spent over 15 years as a representative of Gulf N.S. to ALPAC (Atlantic Large Pelagic Advisory Committee), which advises the Canadian delegation of ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas). Dan welcomes you aboard the Jan&Grace to share in their knowledge, enthusiasm and love for Bluefin Tuna fishing that he and his crew experience.

Dan’s first mate, Grace, is a chip off the ol’ block and has been on her Dad’s fishing boat since before she could walk. She has been his helper since 2005 and is a natural on the boat. She fell in love with fishing as a full time Snow Crab and Lobster helper while attending high school and university. But ever since the first time she experienced the thrill of catching Giants with her Dad, she knew she wanted to do this for a living. She spends the “off season” as a personal fitness trainer and continues to fish full time as a Lobster, Snow Crab and Tuna helper. She looks forward to the day when she becomes Captain and a 4th generation fisher.

Scotia Bluefin Tuna Charters

Exciting Bluefin Tuna Adventures in the Northumberland Strait and Southern Gulf of St Lawrence. Chartering is scheduled to begin on September 1st. Please contact us for availability and rates.

Bluefin Tuna average at a massive size of 6.5 feet and 550 pounds and range from 500-1200 pounds. These exceptional fish swim from the Gulf of Mexico every year and move through the Northumberland Strait each fall. The largest Bluefin Tuna ever caught and recorded was in the Northumberland Strait and weighed 1496 pounds.

Our boat, the Angela Marie was built by Dixon’s Marine.
It’s 45′ long and 17′ wide and is fully equipped to meet all your fishing and comfort needs.

  • We are completely equipped for all aspects of tuna fishing, including:
  • Chumming – dropping chum to attract the fish to the boat’s area
  • Trolling – drawing the hook through the water to create motion and attract the fish
  • Kite Fishing – pulls the gear further away from the boat for increased chance to catch a fish – because the fish sometimes avoid the boat

We are rigged with:

  • Commercial Tuna Rods – 180 lb. test to help keep the tuna on the line
  • All Tackle including a Fighting Chair – Fighting a tuna can be tough work and great fun at the same time – our fighting chair will keep you safe the whole time
  • Live-well Tank – For keeping live bait such as mackerel – great for landing tuna

Meet the Captain

My name is Captain Dan MacGillivray, I have been fishing the waters of Northumberland strait and the southern gulf of St Lawrence for my entire life. As a third-generation fisherman who started fishing bluefin tuna with my father at age 16, I discovered my passion for fishing at an early age.

In 2012, I co-founded Scotia Bluefin Tuna Charters along with my father. Since my father’s retirement, I have acquired my captain’s license and have brought the adventures of the Northumberland strait to many clients.

I look forward to offering a prestigious fishing experience and helping you catch one of Nova Scotia’s beautiful giants!
